You might be under the impression that now is not the right time to be focusing on your search engine optimisation efforts, but with internet usage growing by as much as 70% during lockdown, it’s clear that SEO is currently more important than ever for your business.
So – what does an effective SEO strategy look like during a pandemic? Here are our top tips:
Focus on your local SEO – many people are now searching out local businesses to support online, or looking for extra information regarding health and safety precautions before making a visit. Make sure your website is targeting local keywords through your metadata, page content, and blog posts.
Update your Google My Business profile – with more people searching online, it’s vital that your Google My Business information is up-to-date. Create a profile if you don’t currently have one - and if you do, update your hours and available services, e.g. takeaway, delivery, online classes, etc.
Target relevant keywords – take a look at the keywords your website is currently targeting – do they make sense for the current situation? Coronavirus has led to big changes in search behaviour, so think about your target audience’s needs, wants, and interests right now. Google Trends is a great place to look for inspiration – trending phrases include ‘virtual’, ‘lockdown’, ‘DIY’, and more.
Add new content – Google’s algorithms value websites that are consistently updated with new, high quality content. Using your keyword research, write blog posts that will help answer your customer’s questions during the pandemic. However, don’t forget to also create evergreen content (i.e. not time-sensitive) that will help you to win more traffic for your website in the long run.
